Cigarette smokers have reduced brain levels of MAO A and MAO B (Fowler, 1996). This is the same for animals exposed to cigarette smoke.

It has been found that levels of MAO B are lower in people with alcoholism (Alexopolous, 1983). MAO A mutations may be linked to a predisposition to alcoholism (Juo, 1999).
