MAO’s affect on neurotransmitters
MAO A and MAO B affect many neurotransmitters in the body. MAO A prefers serotonin, epinephrine and norepinephrine as substrates. MAO B prefers phenylethylamine and benzylamine. The common substrates for MAO A and B are dopamine, tyramine and tryptamine. MAO A inhibitors have been used as antidepressants and MAO B inhibitors have been used to treat Parkinson’s Disease and fight aging.
