Dr. George Aghajanian

DR. GEORGE AGHAJANIAN is a Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology at the Yale School of Medicine. Although in high school he was interested in engineering, once in college he decided to go into medicine. He chose psychopharmacology as his specialty and wrote his medical school thesis on LSD as a model of schizophrenia. His work focuses on mechanisms of chemical neurotransmission in the central nervous system, using electrophysiological approaches in the rat brain slice preparation. He also studies the ways that psychotropic drugs (anti-psychotics, antidepressants, hallucinogens, and opiates) affect the actions of neurotransmitters.
